Resources such as reflection sheets, merit lists and task lists were introduced. Techniques such as breathing methods, clapping, playing games like ‘Simon Says’ that could be used to refocus learner attention, or to calm or quieten down the learners were demonstrated through role play.

Mihlali lives in a neighborhood where gangs, drugs and violence are an everyday reality. It’s not safe she told us. Mihlali was struggling at her last school and the Teachers dealing with already overcrowded classes, could not afford to spend any time with her. Her mother knew she would be left behind.

Image: Youth-led project significantly decreases bullying at school A group of young people at Thuto Lesedi Secondary School have tackled the problem of bullying & cyberbullying eliminate the practice at their school.

The leaders behind this project are all graduates of the Columba Leadership programme, which instils young people with the skills and the confidence to take charge of their own lives. In 2016, learners noticed that incidents of bullying at the school had dramatically increased compared to the year before. Most of the victims were Grade 8 learners, in their first year of high school, who were bullied because they came from different ethnic or cultural backgrounds. There was also a grave concern regarding the incidence of rape in the community.   Read More...

 Charlize has been a funder of Salesian Life Choices for a number of years through her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) and she was full of praise for the work that Life Choices do with youth from the Cape Flats.
The visit started in the newly renovated office in Landsdowne where they were introduced to the team and some students attending a coding course. The group then moved on to Oaklands High School for a highly entertaining “Straight Talks” session with Grade 9 learners as well as a visit to a mobile clinic in Langa that provides youth friendly HIV counselling and testing as part of the Health4Life programme.   Read More...
